The commercial problem

Africa is not one regulatory market.

A regional ambition still has to become country-level permissions, credible partnerships, workable controls and clear operating responsibility.

Disconnected legal memos rarely give management the whole decision. Ekue & Ekue brings the product, transaction, regulatory and financial-crime questions together—then identifies where formal local advice is required.

Inside a diagnostic

“Our partner has a licence. Can we launch?”

A founder needs an answer before signing a partnership agreement. This short extract shows how we would bring the findings together for that decision.

Illustrative extract. The business, documents and findings below are fictional. This is not a client case or advice on a particular country.

Sample management note

Before you sign the partnership agreement

RecommendationAdapt

The partner may offer a workable route into the market. But the documents in this example leave two important questions unanswered: whether its permissions cover your proposed service, and who is responsible when a payment raises a concern. I would resolve both before committing to a launch date.

The proposed model

Your company would provide the app and bring in customers. A local partner would receive and settle payments in one African market. You plan to rely on that partner’s permissions.

The findings and what is still missing

What the documents tell us

The sample file contains a product outline, a licence copy supplied by the partner and a draft agreement. The draft gives the partner responsibility for settlement, but says only that it will “handle compliance”.

What they do not establish

The licence copy alone does not establish that this particular arrangement is covered. The file also leaves open who contracts with customers and who owns customer checks, sanctions alerts, monitoring and reporting.

Where you depend on the partner

You would rely on its permissions, settlement service and access to transaction records. The agreement needs to make clear what information your team can obtain and who can stop a payment while a concern is investigated.

The next three actions

  1. Confirm the permitted route. Obtain current permission evidence and ask qualified local counsel to assess the proposed arrangement, including whether your company needs its own authorisation.
  2. Agree who does what. Set out who owns each customer and financial-crime task, what information is shared and how concerns are escalated.
  3. Walk through a difficult payment. Test who spots the issue, who can hold the payment and who makes and records the decision.

When to reconsider: Review the recommendation once the permission questions are resolved and the responsibilities are agreed and tested. If the proposed model cannot be supported, change the route or pause the launch.

A full diagnostic would include the agreed scope, source references, evidence dates, assumptions and limits. This extract shows the management summary only.

Coordinated execution

One relationship. The right specialist at the right point.

Once the route forward is clear, we help keep implementation connected—so regulatory analysis, specialist advice and operational delivery do not become separate conversations.

01

Ekue & Ekue

Leads the assessment, regulatory analysis and programme coordination, with a single point of contact for the engagement.

02

Specialist network

Where needed, appropriately qualified specialists are identified for the scope. Their responsibilities, fees and separate engagement terms are agreed before work begins.

03

Your business

Retains ownership of its commercial decisions, applications, licences and regulated activities.

Our point of view

“Advice becomes valuable when it produces a decision, an evidence trail and a sequence of action—not merely an opinion.”
Independent by design

We assess before we endorse. Vendor or partner relationships never replace independent judgment, disclosed conflicts and evidence-based conclusions.

Eric Ekue

Founder & Regulatory Market-Entry Adviser

I’m Eric Ekue, founder of Ekue & Ekue.

I grew up in Lomé, Togo, and now live in the United Kingdom. Africa is home to me, and it is also central to the business I’m building.

Read my professional journey

My route into regulatory advisory has been a gradual one. I studied law at London Metropolitan University, then spent more than 17 years working in sales and business development. Those years taught me to listen, ask questions and understand what someone needs before suggesting a solution. They also gave me an appreciation of the pressure that comes with winning business and making commercial decisions.

Over time, my interest in financial crime and digital assets became a professional focus. I qualified as a TRM Certified Investigator and continue to develop my knowledge of the regulation shaping these markets.

I founded Ekue & Ekue to bring those parts of my background together. For a business considering an African market, the opportunity can be exciting while the practical questions remain difficult: Can we operate this way? Which permissions matter? What are we relying on a partner to do?

My role is to help clients work through those questions, understand what remains uncertain and decide what to do next.

I work in English and French, helping clients navigate conversations across Anglophone and Francophone markets.

When you work with Ekue & Ekue, you work directly with me. I take that responsibility personally.

Market updates explain regulatory developments and their practical implications. Perspectives explore the questions behind a market-entry or compliance decision.

Before we work together

A few practical questions.

Do we need a full diagnostic?

Not always. You may have one specific regulatory question, or need a broader assessment of a country, corridor, product or partner. We start with the decision you need to make and agree the scope, deliverables and evidence requirements before work begins.

How are fees agreed?

Fees are quoted against an agreed scope. We set out the deliverables, timing, assumptions and exclusions in the proposal. Any additional work is discussed and agreed before it is undertaken. Specialist fees are identified separately where relevant.

How do you work with local specialists?

Where formal local legal, tax, audit or other specialist advice is needed, we help define the question and coordinate the input. Specialists are engaged separately under agreed terms, with their own professional responsibilities and fees. Ekue & Ekue provides advisory and coordination support; licensing and commercial decisions remain with the relevant authorities and your business.

Start with the decision

Which market, corridor or partner question is holding up your next move?

Tell us what your business does, the markets or corridor involved, and the decision deadline. We will discuss the question, the scope and whether a diagnostic is the right next step.
